Some permanent outdoor lights can be cut or extended; others cannot. The answer belongs to the exact model and its installation manual, not to the brand name or the word “permanent.” We have not performed these modifications ourselves. This is a planning guide based on manufacturer documentation, checked on 7 September 2026.
Check the model before planning a cut
Govee lists its Permanent Outdoor Lights Pro as cuttable and extendable according to its manual. Its Permanent Outdoor Lights 2 page explicitly says those lights are not cuttable. A tutorial for one is not permission to modify the other.
For the Pro models listed on the manufacturer’s product page, Govee states a maximum total length of 200 ft and requires a driver module beyond 150 ft. Verify the kit and included parts before relying on that limit. For the other family, see Govee’s Lights 2 documentation.
Three questions that look like one
| What you need | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Remove unwanted lit length | Approved cut locations, connectors and end termination |
| Add more lights | Compatible extension lights, controller capacity and maximum supported run |
| Cross an unlit gap | Approved extension cable, its permitted location and length |
A cable that fits a connector does not establish compatibility. Keep the kit’s model number, extension part number and manual together when asking manufacturer support about an unusual layout.
Draw the awkward sections first
On the roofline worksheet, mark the controller, each lit section, every gap and the final light. Write actual dimensions next to each. That turns “will this cover my house?” into a question the manufacturer’s support team can answer.
For example, a porch separated from the main eave needs a plan for the gap as well as enough lights for the porch. Buying a longer lit string alone may not solve that geometry. Likewise, the nearest outlet may be on the opposite side from the best starting point.
Before changing any hardware
Use the current manual supplied for your exact kit for all cutting, connection, sealing and power instructions. This page deliberately does not substitute a generic splicing procedure. If the documentation does not explicitly support your proposed change, ask the manufacturer before proceeding.
Check the finished plan against the installation checklist, including mounting access and the separate exposure requirements of the lights, controller and power supply. A weather rating for the lights does not cover every component.
If the intended route cannot be built within the kit’s rules, change the route or compare another permanent lighting system. For the footage calculation itself, use Is 100 ft enough?.

Frequently asked questions
Can I cut a permanent light kit to length?
It depends on the exact model. Govee lists its Permanent Outdoor Lights Pro as cuttable and extendable according to its manual, while its Permanent Outdoor Lights 2 page says those lights are not cuttable. Check your own manual before cutting anything.
Can I use a tutorial for one permanent light model on another?
No. A tutorial for one model is not permission to modify another. The answer belongs to the exact model and its installation manual, not to the brand name or the word permanent.
How long can a permanent light run be extended?
For the Govee Pro models on the manufacturer’s page, Govee states a maximum total length of 200 ft and requires a driver module beyond 150 ft. Verify the kit and included parts before relying on that limit.
How do I get lights across an unlit gap, such as to a separate porch?
Check for an approved extension cable and its permitted location and length. A cable that fits a connector does not establish compatibility. Mark every gap on the worksheet with real dimensions so manufacturer support can answer for your layout.
