Who each one is for
The JMEXSUSS Icicle 39 is for the classic fringe along the eave in plain warm white. It has 80 drops and 400 LEDs over 38.8 ft of lit string, with no app and no colour, in the lowest cost tier.
The Brightown C9 99 is for a roofline in colour. It is 150 opaque C9 bulbs about 7.9 in apart over 99 ft, each with an RGB chip, run from a Bluetooth app.
Both are seasonal strings, listed in the Christmas lights hub.
The differences that matter
- Shape. Icicle drops hang below the eave as a fringe. C9 bulbs sit in a row along it. The C9, icicle or net guide covers how each shape reads on a house.
- Colour. The Icicle is warm white only. The C9 does warm white, red and green, or any other colour, though its warm white is an RGB mix rather than a dedicated chip.
- Control. The Icicle has eight modes on a button at the plug, a memory, and a timer of 6 hours on, 18 hours off. The C9 uses the Hello Fairy Bluetooth app, a 40-key remote and a control box, with 58 scenes, 16 single colours and 4 music modes. It has no Wi-Fi.
- Length. The Icicle is 38.8 ft lit plus a 10 ft lead and connects end to end up to 3 sets. The C9 is 99 ft plus a 16.4 ft lead and links to 300 bulbs.
- Weather. The Icicle is IP44, which is rain from any direction and not standing water. The C9 listing says waterproof but states no IP rating, and its adapter needs extra protection in rain.
- Power. The C9 uses a 24V low-voltage adapter listed UL588 and FCC.
- Cost. Both are in the same lowest cost tier, so cost should not decide it.
- Temperature. The C9 lists -4F to 122F. Our data has no temperature range for the Icicle.
Which to buy
- Warm white fringe: the Icicle 39.
- Colour, or one strand for October and December: the C9 99. See one strand for October and December.
- A long straight front: the C9, since one strand covers 99 ft.
- No phone involved: the Icicle, which works from a button.
When to pick neither
Neither string is meant to stay up all year. If you are tired of the ladder, a permanent kit is the alternative, and permanent vs seasonal sets out the trade. Browse the permanent kits for Christmas.
